Will Standing Desks Save Lives?
If any of us watched the recent 60 Minutes report on the health problems associated with sitting we may have all squirmed a bit (especially if you were sitting down as you watched it). The report along with many others in recent years has suggested that sitting down for long periods of time can cause a range of health problems from diabetes to some cancers. There are people who are calling it ‘the new smoking’ or even worse than smoking.
A standing desk means you will burn more calories than if you were sitting down and research has shown that standing often is important for our blood sugar levels. There are also concerns that even exercising regularly will not combat the negative side effects of sitting for long periods of time.
However standing desks may also pose their health problems, standing desks may not be suitable for all employees as it can lead to cramping of legs, sore feet and swelling.
There’s no doubt that companies around the world are embracing the standing desk, including companies such as Google and Facebook. Most companies are looking at both options for their employees, providing a mixture of standing and sitting desks so employees can choose how often they sit and stand each day.
At Symmetry Commercial we feel that a combination of sitting and standing desks provides the best of both worlds. Offering employees a choice between a sitting or standing desk, or a combination of both allow people to choose the best work station for them and at their own pace.
For those who are not ready to make the switch to standing for eight hours a day, or for offices that cannot practically install standing desks, take comfort in the research that suggests even standing for five minutes every hour can reverse the damaging effects of long-term sitting.
